Astrebla Downs National Park
Park Remote Queensland national park of arid grasslands and wetlands
Astrebla Downs National Park in Queensland preserves inland Mitchell grass downs and seasonal floodplains; visitors come for outback drives, birdwatching and remote camping under wide skies.
Astrebla Downs National Park is a protected area in western Queensland that conserves semi-arid grasslands and the flat downs typical of the Channel Country. The park protects native grassland ecosystems and wildlife adapted to arid and seasonally flooded conditions.
The landscape is dominated by open plains, grass cover, and an intricate network of ephemeral channels that fill in wet seasons. Ecological value is highest when inland flooding creates temporary wetlands that support breeding waterbirds and other fauna.
The park was declared to conserve representative Channel Country ecosystems and to protect the natural functioning of the grassland and floodplain systems. It remains remote with limited visitor infrastructure.
Geographically the park lies in far western Queensland within the Channel Country bioregion and is accessed from remote outback roads and station tracks.
- Seasonal wetlands: Seasonal flooding in wet years turns low-lying channels into important ephemeral wetlands that attract large numbers of waterbirds.
