Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is an Orthodox monastery on the island of Crete, Greece, dating mainly to the 16th century and known nationally for its role in Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule. The site is both a religious complex and a historic monument visited for its architecture and history.

The complex includes a distinctive main church, cloistered buildings and a refectory that houses a small museum with relics and displays about the monastery’s past. The site receives many visitors who come to see the monastery architecture and learn about the 1866 events commemorated there.

The monastery dates to the late medieval and early modern periods and acquired its present historic importance after the 1866 siege during the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule, when defenders and many refugees were killed. Since then Arkadi has been preserved as a symbol of Cretan national memory and is maintained as a cultural monument.

Arkadi Monastery sits inland on central-northern Crete near the village of Arkadi, within the administrative region of Rethymno. It is reached by road from Rethymno and other towns on Crete’s north coast.
