Plaza Main Thessaloniki waterfront square with neoclassical buildings
Aristotelous Square opens onto Thessaloniki’s waterfront with broad façades, cafés and public events. Visitors stroll the colonnaded promenade to watch city life and access nearby museums.
Aristotelous Square is the principal city square of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, positioned on the city’s seafront and forming a key civic and social meeting point. The square’s layout and building façades date to the post-1917 reconstruction of the city.
The open paved square, flanked by colonnaded buildings and cafes, is used for public gatherings, events and promenading along the waterfront. Visitors commonly pass through to reach the nearby waterfront boulevard and port, and to view the square’s axial relationship with the sea.
Following the Great Fire of 1917, the square and surrounding district were rebuilt according to an urban plan by the architect Ernest Hébrard, who proposed the square’s long north-south axis and the uniform façades that define its appearance.
Aristotelous Square sits on Thessaloniki’s central seafront in the region of Central Macedonia, immediately inland from the Thermaic Gulf and within walking distance of the city’s historic center.
- Promenade and views: Best experienced on foot from the waterfront, where the square's open north-facing promenade provides clear views across the Thermaic Gulf.
- Design and planning: Designed after the 1917 city fire, the square's uniform façades and colonnades reflect the early 20th-century urban plan by Ernest Hébrard.
