Patagonia National Park
National Park Vast Patagonian reserve protecting steppe, mountains, and wildlife
A protected area in Santa Cruz province conserving Andean foothills, lenga forests and Patagonian steppe; visitors hike remote trails, camp and watch for guanacos, condors and other native wildlife.
Patagonia National Park is a national park in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, that protects a mosaic of Patagonian steppe, lenga forest and mountain fringe near the Andes. The park was established in the 2010s from former private reserves that were transferred to the Argentine state to create a protected area at landscape scale.
Visitors use the park for trekking, wildlife observation and backcountry experiences; the protected habitats support populations of guanaco, Andean condor and a range of Patagonian flora. Trails and low-impact visitor infrastructure provide routes into different sectors of the park for day hikes and multi-day routes.
The park’s creation resulted from cooperation between conservation organizations and the national government to secure continuous habitat and improve long-term stewardship; management focuses on restoration, fire prevention and sustainable visitor access. The area has been restored in places and opened to regulated public use following the land transfers.
The park is located in southern Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province along the eastern slopes of the Andes near the border with Chile, forming part of the broader Patagonian conservation landscape.
- Origins and wildlife: Created in the 2010s from large private reserves donated by conservation organizations, the park protects Patagonian steppe and native forests and supports wildlife such as guanacos and Andean condors.
How to Get to Patagonia National Park #
The park is remote: the nearest larger towns are Gobernador Gregores and El Calafate. Most visitors drive from El Calafate (about 4-6 hours depending on route and conditions) along Ruta 40 and provincial gravel roads; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. There are also guided tour operators and multi-day trekking outfitters that operate from towns along Ruta 40 and from regional airports in Río Gallegos or El Calafate.
Tips for Visiting Patagonia National Park #
- Plan for long distances: fuel and supplies are sparse in this part of Santa Cruz Province-carry extra food, water, and diesel if driving a rental vehicle.
- Bring layered waterproof clothing: weather can flip from sun to sleet in a single afternoon.
- Hire a local guide for multi-day treks in the massif-routes cross private estancias and glacial terrain where tracks vanish.

Best visited in the austral summer for trail access and long daylight; weather is famously volatile year-round.
