Arènes de Lutèce
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman amphitheatre located in Paris' Latin Quarter
A Roman amphitheatre in Paris’s Latin Quarter, Arènes de Lutèce draws visitors for exposed masonry, tiered seating and compact archaeological displays that sit inside a small park - a quiet stop when exploring nearby Sorbonne streets and the Roman Forum remains of the city.
The Arènes de Lutèce is a Gallo-Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD in the Roman city of Lutetia, on the site of modern Paris. It is an important urban archaeological monument dating to Roman provincial times.
Much of the stone seating (cavea), parts of the arena and surrounding walls remain exposed and form a public garden in the Latin Quarter; the site can show tiered seating and access passages used for spectacles, with an estimated capacity of around 15,000. Interpretive panels explain the site’s layout and function within Roman Lutetia.
The amphitheatre was constructed in the Roman period for public spectacles and civic gatherings and later fell out of use as the city evolved. It was buried and built over in the Middle Ages and was rediscovered and excavated in the 19th century, after which surviving fabric was conserved and opened as an archaeological site.
The ruins sit in Paris’s 5th arrondissement within the Latin Quarter, tucked among streets and private buildings; the site is reached on foot from central Paris and is managed as an open-air historic monument.
- Capacity: Estimated seating for about 15,000 spectators, making it one of the larger Roman amphitheatres in Gaul.
- Access: Located in Paris's 5th arrondissement, the site functions today as a public archaeological garden with visible stone seating and walls.
How to Get to Arènes de Lutèce #
From Paris city centre: take Métro Line 7 to Place Monge or Censier-Daubenton; the arena is a short walk (2-6 minutes) from either station. Numerous buses serve Rue Monge; it’s an easy stroll from the Panthéon (about 10-12 minutes).
Tips for Visiting Arènes de Lutèce #
- Go at dawn or late afternoon to catch long shadows falling across the stone seating - it cuts the tourist numbers and sharpens the sense of antiquity.
- Start at the Rue Monge entrance and walk the southern steps: the wear on the stones there is medieval, not modern.
- Look for the small plaque that marks where archaeologists in 1869 uncovered the arena - many visitors miss the excavation story.
