A well-preserved Roman amphitheatre in Nîmes dating to the first century AD; visitors tour the arena’s tiers, attend concerts or bullfights and explore adjacent Roman monuments.
The Arena of Nîmes is a Roman amphitheatre in the city of Nîmes in southern France, constructed in the 1st century AD during the Flavian period. It is one of the best-preserved Roman arenas and remains an active civic venue.
The structure is an elliptical amphitheatre whose external and internal stonework largely survive, with intact seating tiers and passageways; its dimensions are approximately 133 by 101 metres and it originally accommodated some tens of thousands of spectators. The site continues to host public events, including concerts and the region’s traditional bullfighting seasons, and guided tours allow access to the interior passages and upper galleries.
Built in the 1st century AD for gladiatorial games and public spectacles, the arena was adapted in the medieval period as a fortified quarter and later restored in the 18th and 19th centuries to preserve the Roman fabric. Conservation work in recent centuries has aimed to maintain its structural integrity while enabling contemporary use.
The amphitheatre sits in the historic centre of Nîmes in the Occitania region, within walking distance of the town’s other Roman monuments and civic attractions.
