The freestanding marble arch stands near the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the entrance to the Roman-era additions toward the Acropolis, making it a common stop on central Athens walking routes. Erected in the early 2nd century AD, the arch marked the boundary and dedication of Hadrian’s building program in Athens and celebrated the emperor’s relationship with the city.
