Main image

The Arch of Hadrian in Athens is a monumental Roman arch erected around AD 131-132 to honor the emperor Hadrian. It functions as a ceremonial gateway between the area of the ancient city and the Hadrianic additions.

The freestanding marble arch stands near the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the entrance to the Roman-era additions toward the Acropolis, making it a common stop on central Athens walking routes. Its sculpted details and surviving inscriptions are visible from street level and are frequently photographed in combination with views of nearby classical monuments.

Erected in the early 2nd century AD, the arch marked the boundary and dedication of Hadrian’s building program in Athens and celebrated the emperor’s relationship with the city. The monument has been repaired and restored at various times but retains its core marble structure and epigraphic decoration.

The arch sits on the edge of the archaeological zone between the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Roman-era routes leading toward the Acropolis, in the historic center of Athens.

  • Inscriptions: One inscription distinguishes the older city of Theseus from the Hadrianic city, a detail often noted on opposite faces of the arch.
