Aralar Range
Mountains Mountain range straddling Basque Country and Navarre
A limestone massif on the Navarra-Biscay border, the Aralar Range attracts hikers and heritage seekers with ridgelines, karst scenery, grazing meadows and remote chapels such as San Miguel.
The Aralar Range is a limestone mountain massif in northern Spain, straddling parts of Navarre and the Basque province of Gipuzkoa and forming part of the Basque Mountains. It is characterized by rugged karst terrain, high pastures and a network of trails used for hiking and shepherding.
The area includes open limestone ridges, dolines and small caves, and has long been used for pastoralism, with stone shepherd huts and seasonal grazing. It contains a number of peaks and locally important religious sites that attract walkers and pilgrims.
Human use of the range stretches back many centuries with traditional grazing shaping much of the landscape; religious sites such as the Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar have medieval origins and have drawn pilgrims for generations. Modern recreational use focuses on hiking, climbing and cultural visits.
The Aralar Range lies inland from the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain, between Gipuzkoa and Navarre, and is accessible from nearby towns and regional roads.
- Karst and pastoral landscape: The range is primarily limestone karst, with caves, crests and pastoral landscapes shaped by centuries of grazing and transhumance.
- Elevation and activities: The highest summit rises to just over 1,400 metres, making the range a common destination for day hikes and local pilgrimages.
What to See #
- Ganboa peak: Ganboa, the range's highest summit reaching just over 1,400 metres and offering panoramic views across the Basque Mountains.
- Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar: The Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar, a historic pilgrimage church and complex set on the range's eastern slopes with Romanesque elements.
How to Get to Aralar Range #
