Arago Cave

Arago Cave (Grotte d’Arago) is a prehistoric karst cave site near the village of Tautavel in southern France, noted for rich Middle Pleistocene archaeological deposits. The site has produced numerous stone tools, faunal remains and hominin fossils important to Paleolithic research.

The cave and adjacent research facilities present stratified deposits preserving repeated human occupations; recovered material includes lithic industries and hominin specimens dated to roughly 450,000 years ago. A local museum and research centre in Tautavel displays many of the finds and provides interpretation for visitors.

Systematic excavations began in the mid-20th century and have continued for decades under French research institutions, yielding a deep and well-studied sequence of human activity and environmental evidence. The site has been central to debates about archaic humans in Western Europe.

Arago Cave is located in the Roussillon area of southern France, in Pyrénées-Orientales within the Occitanie region, close to the village of Tautavel.
