Aquincum
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman settlement with archaeological ruins in Budapest
Aquincum in Budapest’s Óbuda district preserves Roman city ruins and a museum displaying mosaics, baths and urban remains from the Danubian Roman frontier-visited for archaeology and glimpses of Roman urban life.
Aquincum is the ruins of a Roman town and military camp located in the Óbuda district of Budapest, Hungary, established in the 1st century AD. It is one of the main archaeological sites in Budapest with an associated museum covering excavated finds.
The site includes exposed foundations of streets, houses, public baths and an amphitheatre, together with mosaics, inscriptions and stonework displayed in the museum. Visitors can follow marked paths through the open-air park to see structural remains and museum exhibits that document Roman urban life.
Aquincum developed as a Roman military base and civilian settlement during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and remained occupied through the late Roman period. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries uncovered large parts of the town and have produced the museum collection.
Located on the northern bank of the Danube within Budapest’s Óbuda neighborhood, the site sits inside the modern city and is accessible by public transport from central Budapest.
- Aquincum Museum: Open-air site and museum are colocated in Budapest's Óbuda district; the museum displays mosaics, inscriptions and everyday Roman artifacts recovered on-site.
- On-site Ruins: The amphitheatre and several bathhouse foundations are the most complete visible ruins and make the site easily walkable on marked paths.
What to See #
- Aquincum Museum and Archaeological Park: Covers an on-site indoor archaeological collection and an open-air archaeological park where foundations, street layouts and building remains are exposed for walking visits.
- Roman Amphitheatre: Visible ruins of a Roman amphitheatre adjacent to the museum, with stone seating and excavated arena foundations from the Roman period.
- Roman Bathhouses and Houses: Remains of Roman bath complexes and residential house foundations showing hypocaust heating systems and mosaic fragments.
