Aqueduct of Segovia
Monument Roman aqueduct still standing as engineering marvel
Segovia’s Roman aqueduct spans the Plaza del Azoguejo with two tiers of granite arches; visitors admire its engineering, nearby cathedral, and climb surrounding streets for different perspectives.
The Aqueduct of Segovia is a Roman-era aqueduct that carries water across the city of Segovia and is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Spain. Most of the visible structure dates from the late 1st or early 2nd century AD.
The aqueduct features a two-tier arcade of granite blocks with about 167 arches along its city section, rising to approximately 28.5 metres at the highest point. Its scale and preservation make it a primary city landmark and frequent subject for photographs.
Built using unmortared granite blocks set in place by precise cutting and weight, the aqueduct originally transported water from nearby springs into the Roman settlement and later medieval city. It remained in use for centuries and was maintained and adapted by later inhabitants.
The aqueduct runs through Segovia’s old town; the best-known stretch is between the Plaza del Azoguejo and the Alcázar area, within easy walking distance of the cathedral and other central attractions.
- Structure: The aqueduct's tallest arches reach about 28.5 metres and the visible two-tier arcade includes roughly 167 arches in the city stretch.
- Best viewpoint: It is a well-preserved Roman engineering work running through the old town; the lower sections are integrated into later streets and buildings, making the best views from Plaza del Azoguejo.

Segovia’s Roman Aqueduct stands in the old town at Plaza del Azoguejo. The city centre is pedestrian-friendly and the aqueduct is a short walk from the local bus stops and the town’s central areas. From Madrid it’s roughly 90 km northwest (about a 1-1.5 hour drive on the A-6/AP-6); note that the AVE station (Segovia-Guiomar) is outside the city (~12 km) with regular buses and taxis linking the station and the city centre.
Tips for Visiting Aqueduct of Segovia #
- Visit at dawn or after sunset when the aqueduct is beautifully lit and the streets beneath are much quieter for close-up photos - daytime brings crowds and tour buses around Plaza del Azoguejo.
- Approach from Plaza del Azoguejo to see the full height of the arches, then walk up the adjacent streets (e.g., Cuesta de San Martín/Cuesta de San Juan) for elevated views that capture the aqueduct against the old city.
- Spend some time in the surrounding historic quarter rather than only viewing the monument from ground level; several vantage points around the Alcázar and Jewish Quarter give striking perspectives that many visitors miss.
