Aqua Alexandrina
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman aqueduct supplying imperial Rome
Remains of the Aqua Alexandrina in Rome mark an imperial aqueduct route. Visitors study the masonry, nearby ruins and the city’s layered water-supply history on guided walks.
The Aqua Alexandrina (Acqua Alessandrina) is a Roman aqueduct named after Emperor Alexander Severus that supplied water to parts of Rome in the third century AD.
Surviving elements comprise sections of channeling, masonry remains and later-era reutilisations incorporated into the urban fabric; some traces are visible in northeast Rome where the supply entered the city. Remnants are mostly archaeological features rather than a continuous above-ground structure.
Constructed under Alexander Severus in the early third century AD to augment Rome’s water supply, the aqueduct later fell into disuse and parts were repurposed in the medieval and modern periods. Its route and remains have been documented by archaeological study.
Remains are located within the city of Rome in the Lazio region, with visible traces and later fountains and conduits in the northeastern sectors of the ancient city.
- Origin: Named for the Severan emperor who commissioned it, the aqueduct supplied water to parts of Rome in the later Roman imperial period.
