Apuan Alps
Mountains Mountain range in Tuscany famed for marble
Karst and marble mountains in northern Tuscany noted for the Carrara quarries; hikers and climbers explore trails, caves and stone‑working villages.
The Apuan Alps are a compact mountain range in northern Tuscany, Italy, known for rugged karst peaks and the world-famous Carrara marble quarries on their northern flanks. The range forms a dramatic inland backdrop to the coastal towns of Massa and Carrara.
Hiking and climbing routes traverse high limestone ridges and sinkholes, and visitors also come to view and visit the historic quarries. The mountains create a sharp landscape contrast between steep alpine terrain and nearby Mediterranean lowlands.
Marble from the Apuan quarries has been extracted since antiquity and supplied stone to Roman and later sculptors and builders. Conservation and recreational management are concentrated within the Apuan Alps Regional Park, which protects key natural and cultural features.
Geographically the range sits between the provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara, a short distance inland from the Ligurian Sea and the northern Tuscan coast.
- Marble heritage: The range is famous for Carrara marble extraction, a quarrying tradition that dates back to Roman times and continues commercially today.
- Topography: Peaks rise to near 2,000 meters with steep karst terrain and a contrast between alpine summits and nearby Tuscan lowlands and coastlines.
What to See #
- Carrara quarries: Carrara marble quarries - historic, large-scale quarries on the northern slopes, supplying high-quality white and blue-grey marble used since Roman times.
- Regional park: Apuan Alps Regional Park - a protected area covering much of the range that offers hiking routes, viewpoints and conservation of karst landscapes.
