Apollonia is an ancient Greek and later Roman archaeological site in western Albania, noted for remains of public buildings, streets and defensive works. It was an important regional centre in antiquity with cultural and commercial significance.
Visitors can see the acropolis, a Hellenistic theatre, public structures and excavated foundations that reveal the city’s urban plan. The site’s archaeological trails display masonry, column bases and portions of ancient streets and squares.
Founded in the Archaic period as a Greek colony, Apollonia flourished through the Hellenistic and Roman eras before decline in late antiquity. Excavations over the last century have revealed significant public and civic architecture and finds that illuminate the city’s history.
The ruins lie in Fier County in western Albania, inland from the Adriatic coast and within driving distance of the city of Fier.
