Apolima
Island Small Samoan island with volcanic origins
Apolima sits in the Apolima Strait off Upolu with a single village on a volcanic cone; visitors arrive by small boat for village visits and coastal snorkeling.
Apolima is a small volcanic island in Samoa located in the Apolima Strait between the two main islands, Upolu and Savaiʻi. It is occupied by a single village and retains the morphology of a steep volcanic cone with a sheltered landing area.
The island’s shoreline and interior are compact, with housing concentrated in the village area and steep slopes rising directly from the coast. Recreational visits are limited and usually arranged from the larger neighbouring islands.
Apolima formed through volcanic activity and has been settled traditionally by Samoan communities. The island has retained a small, continuous resident population and traditional local governance.
Geographically the island sits roughly midway in the channel between Upolu and Savaiʻi, forming part of the Aiga-i-le-Tai administrative district. It is accessed by boat from the larger islands.
- Small inhabited island: The island is a single small volcanic cone with one village and limited infrastructure, so services are minimal for visitors.
