Apidima Cave
Cave Sea-cliff cave with ancient human fossils
A coastal cave near the Mani peninsula, Apidima contains Paleolithic human fossils-including a skull assigned to Homo sapiens-and draws visitors interested in prehistory and rugged coastal scenery.
Apidima Cave is a limestone cave complex on the Mani Peninsula in southern Greece that has yielded Middle and Upper Pleistocene hominin fossils. The site gained international attention after researchers re-dated and re-identified hominin cranial remains recovered from the cave.
The cave assemblage includes two crania with differing morphologies, and a 2019 reanalysis interpreted one specimen as an early Homo sapiens individual and the other as Neanderthal, a result that has implications for models of human dispersal into Eurasia. The finds are primarily paleontological and archaeological rather than large-scale visible ruins.
Excavations and analyses have focused on the recovery, dating and anatomical study of the fossils; the research is part of broader paleoanthropological work in the region. The site’s material has been the subject of international scientific publications.
Apidima Cave is located on the southern tip of the Peloponnese in the Mani area of Greece, on a coastal limestone outcrop near Cape Tenaro (Tainaro). The cave and its finds are managed within Greek heritage frameworks and the fossils are curated in research collections.
- Key scientific finding: A 2019 reanalysis identified one of the Apidima crania as an early Homo sapiens specimen dated to roughly 210,000 years, making the site important for studies of early modern human dispersal in Eurasia.
