Main image

Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3,724 metres and forms the central peak of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park in the Southern Alps. The mountain is a focal point for alpine climbing, guided mountaineering and high-country hiking.

Popular visitor routes include valley walks that provide framed views of the summit and the nearby Tasman Glacier, while the national park visitor centre provides information on climbing, safety and the local environment. Scenic flights and guided alpine activities are common ways to experience the high mountain environment for non-climbers.

The peak was first ascended in 1894 by a local New Zealand party and has since been central to the country’s mountaineering history; the area has a long record of exploration, alpine research and guided mountaineering. Glacial retreat and changing conditions have influenced route choices and access in recent decades.

The mountain stands in the Canterbury Region of the South Island, above the Tasman Glacier and near lakes such as Pukaki; the small settlement of Aoraki/Mount Cook Village serves as the park gateway and visitor base.

  • Highest peak: The summit reaches 3,724 metres, making it the highest peak in New Zealand and the central landmark of the national park.
  • First ascent: The mountain was first climbed in 1894 by a New Zealand party and remains a major objective for experienced mountaineers; weather and technical conditions can be severe.

What to See #

  • Hooker Valley Track: A valley track that leads to a moraine lake at the base of the peak and is one of the most visited walking routes in the national park, offering repeated views of the summit.
  • Tasman Glacier: A large glacier that terminates in the Tasman valley; it is the largest glacier in New Zealand and is visible from park roads and viewpoints.
  • Aoraki/Mount Cook Village and visitor centre: A small mountain village and visitor hub that contains the national park visitor centre and an alpine museum focusing on mountaineering and the region's exploration history.
