Main image

Aoba, more widely known as Ambae, is a volcanic island in Penama Province, Vanuatu, dominated by a central active volcano and crater lakes. The island supports scattered village settlements and fertile agricultural land around its coastal fringes.

Visitors encounter crater lakes and volcanic slopes in the interior as well as local villages, markets and coastal coconut plantations. The volcanic system has produced ash emissions and eruptions in recent years, affecting habitation and travel at times.

The island’s volcano produced significant eruptive activity in 2017-2018, resulting in temporary mass evacuations and ongoing monitoring by Vanuatu authorities. Recovery and resettlement have occurred in phases following those events.

Geographically Aoba/Ambae lies in the central Vanuatu archipelago within Penama Province, between larger neighbouring islands, and is reached by domestic flights or sea from provincial centres.

  • Recent volcanic activity: The island has an active central volcano that produced major eruptions in 2017-2018, triggering island-wide evacuations and ash hazards.

Tips for Visiting Aoba #

  • Check Vanuatu government and local Penama advisories for volcanic activity and displacement updates before booking-Ambae (Aoba) has had major evacuations in recent years and status can change.
  • Plan travel in the drier season (roughly May-October) to reduce the chance of cancelled inter-island flights or ferries; Luganville (Santo) is the usual hub for onward connections to Ambae.
  • Book transport and local contacts in advance and confirm schedules the day before arrival: services to Ambae are infrequent and changes or cancellations are common, so a local agent or operator will smooth transfers and landings.
