Antwerp City Hall
Tower Renaissance city hall on Antwerp's Grote Markt
Renaissance city hall on Antwerp’s Grote Markt, noted for an ornate façade and period interiors; visitors pair it with the cathedral, guild houses and the market square cafés.
Antwerp City Hall (Stadhuis van Antwerpen) is the 16th-century Renaissance town hall on the Grote Markt in central Antwerp, Flanders, built in the 1560s. It is an important civic building combining Italian Renaissance and local Flemish traditions.
The façade and sculpted detailing are the primary attractions, facing the Grote Markt and the Brabo fountain; the square provides clear views of the building’s symmetrical frontage. Interiors contain ceremonial chambers and historic civic rooms used by the city government.
Designed and executed in the 1560s by local architects influenced by Renaissance models, the building served as Antwerp’s seat of municipal government from its completion and has undergone restorations after fire and wartime damage. It remained the city hall through successive political regimes and retains its civic function today.
Sited on the Grote Markt in Antwerp’s historic centre, the town hall stands in the pedestrianised core of the city, within walking distance of Antwerp Central railway station and the River Scheldt.
- Viewing point: Best views are from the Grote Markt across the square, where the full Renaissance façade and ornamentation are visible.
- UNESCO listing: Included in the Belfries of Belgium and France UNESCO World Heritage listing as an important civic building in the Low Countries.
How to Get to Antwerp City Hall #
Antwerp City Hall (Stadhuis) sits on the Grote Markt in Antwerp’s historic center. From Antwerpen-Centraal railway station it’s an easy walk of about 1 km (10-15 minutes) via the Meir shopping street and Groenplaats to the Grote Markt; many intercity and local trains terminate at Antwerpen-Centraal.
By car, Antwerp is about 45 km north of Brussels via the E19/A1 (roughly 40-60 minutes depending on traffic); there is limited parking around the historic centre so most visitors arrive by train or tram and walk into the square.
Tips for Visiting Antwerp City Hall #
- Arrive early on a weekday (before the midday rush) to see the façade and Grote Markt with far fewer tourists; the square fills up quickly on weekends and market days.
- Use the main entrance on the Grote Markt side - that's where any public access or information for visitors is normally handled - and check the city website in advance for guided-tour times or restricted access due to official functions.
- Don't miss studying the façade details and the adjoining guild houses from the square; many visitors only photograph the building from a distance and skip the close-up view that reveals the heraldry and sculptural work.
