Anemospilia
Archaeological Site Minoan archaeological site with sacrificial ritual remains
A Bronze Age archaeological site in eastern Crete where excavations revealed a Minoan building complex; visitors come for archaeology and study of prehistoric ritual practice.
Anemospilia is a Minoan archaeological site on central Crete known for a multi-room complex interpreted as a ritual building and for an unusual burial context. The principal remains date to Late Minoan IA, around the 17th century BCE.
Excavation revealed a central room with an altar and a tightly bound skeleton that led the excavator to propose the site preserves evidence of a sudden catastrophe and possible ritual activity. Pottery, tools and architectural features indicate the building had ritual and storage spaces.
The site was formally excavated by Yannis Sakellarakis in the late 1970s and remains an important case study in discussions of Minoan ritual practice. It lies on a ridge in central Crete near the modern area of Archanes in the Heraklion region.
