Aneityum, also spelled Anatom, is the southernmost inhabited island of Vanuatu, located in Tafea Province. It is a volcanic island with a compact inhabited coastline and interior ridges.

The island’s settlements feature traditional Polynesian cultural practices and village life rather than large urban infrastructure. Visitors come for village culture, coastal scenery and local handicrafts where visitation is possible.

Aneityum has long-standing settlement and local chiefly systems; European contact and later colonial administration affected trade and missions on the island. Over time the island has remained relatively remote compared with Vanuatu’s larger islands.

Aneityum sits in the far south of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, separated from the main island chains by open ocean and lying within the administrative province of Tafea. The island is accessed by infrequent inter-island boats or chartered vessels.

  • Local name & culture: Known locally by the variant name Anatom; the island is the southernmost significant inhabited island of Vanuatu and retains strong Polynesian cultural traditions.
