Ancient Corinth is an archaeological site situated beside the modern city of Corinth on the Isthmus of Corinth in the Peloponnese. The site preserves remains from Archaic, Classical and Roman periods and was a major Greek polis and later a Roman colony.

Key visible remains include the Temple of Apollo dating to the Archaic period, the Roman forum and street grid, public monuments and waterworks such as the Fountain of Peirene. The nearby Acrocorinth hill features long-used fortifications and dominates the local skyline.

Historically Corinth was a powerful city-state in classical Greece, destroyed by the Romans in 146 BCE and later reestablished as a Roman colony. The city developed through the Hellenistic and Roman eras and retained strategic importance because of its position linking the Peloponnese to mainland Greece.

The site sits adjacent to the modern town of Corinth near the Isthmus that connects the Peloponnese with mainland Greece, within easy driving distance of the Saronic Gulf and the Corinth Canal area.

  • Notable antiquities: The Fountain of Peirene and other carved waterworks are located within the site and are among the more visited antiquities for close inspection.

What to See #

  • Temple of Apollo: The Temple of Apollo occupies the lower city area and dates to the Archaic period; its remaining colonnade and foundations are prominent on the site.
  • Acrocorinth: Acrocorinth is the fortified hill above the ancient city, used as a fortress across antiquity and the medieval period and offering panoramic views over the plain.
  • Roman forum: The Roman forum and the archaeological remains of streets, public buildings and fountains illustrate the city's reestablishment and development under Roman rule.
