Key visible remains include the Temple of Apollo dating to the Archaic period, the Roman forum and street grid, public monuments and waterworks such as the Fountain of Peirene. The nearby Acrocorinth hill features long-used fortifications and dominates the local skyline.
Historically Corinth was a powerful city-state in classical Greece, destroyed by the Romans in 146 BCE and later reestablished as a Roman colony. The city developed through the Hellenistic and Roman eras and retained strategic importance because of its position linking the Peloponnese to mainland Greece.
