Amphipolis

Amphipolis is an ancient city-site on the lower Strymon River in Central Macedonia, Greece, originally founded in the classical period and important through Hellenistic and Roman times. The site has produced notable Hellenistic-era funerary monuments and urban remains.

Monumental funerary architecture and sculptural works, the prominent stone Lion that marked a funerary monument, and remains of the city walls and theatre. Excavations of a large burial mound in the 2010s revealed complex internal masonry and sculptural decoration that drew wide attention.

The city was founded in the 5th century BCE and later served as an important regional center through the Hellenistic era. Archaeological work has continued intermittently, revealing occupation layers from classical through Byzantine periods.

Amphipolis sits on the coastal plain near the mouth of the Strymon River in Central Macedonia, adjacent to agricultural land and wetlands, with the modern town and road connections serving the archaeological park.

• Kasta Tomb: An enormous funerary mound known as the Kasta Tomb was excavated in the 2010s and produced large marble sculptures and monumental funerary architecture.
• Lion of Amphipolis: A 4th century BCE carved stone lion that once marked the city's approach, now visible near the archaeological area.
• City remains and theatre: Remains of the ancient city including sections of Hellenistic and Roman walls, and a partially preserved theatre area on the river plain.
