Ampato is a high volcanic mountain in Peru’s Arequipa region, part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes. The volcano rises to an elevation of about 6,288 metres and forms part of a cluster of high Andean volcanoes near the city of Arequipa.
The mountain is notable both for its alpine climbing routes and for archaeological significance: in 1995 archaeologists discovered a well-preserved Inca child sacrifice mummy on the summit, one of the best-known high-altitude Inca finds. The peak is approached by technical alpine routes that require acclimatization and glacier travel skills.
Ampato sits among neighboring volcanoes including Misti and Sabancaya, within the high Andean zone west of the Altiplano. Access for expeditions is typically from base locations in the Arequipa region and involves multi-day approaches at altitude.
