Ambras Castle

Ambras Castle is a historic Renaissance castle and museum on a hill above Innsbruck in Tyrol, Austria. It houses the Ambras Collection, assembled in the 16th century by Archduke Ferdinand II, and combines medieval and Renaissance architecture.

Key visitor highlights include the 16th-century Spanish Hall, galleries of portraits and early modern curiosities, and displays of historical armour and arms. The castle’s layout links a medieval lower fortress with a Renaissance upper residence, creating a sequence of exhibition spaces.

The site developed from an earlier medieval stronghold and was transformed in the mid-16th century when Ferdinand II created the castle’s famous collections and residential suites. The collection and many of the principal rooms date to that period.

Ambras Castle overlooks the city of Innsbruck and is located on the Schlossberg hill a short distance from the city centre, making it readily accessible by road.
