Amathus

Amathus is an ancient coastal city on Cyprus renowned as one of the island’s early Iron Age urban centers, situated on the southern coast near the modern Limassol area. It was an important cult and port site in antiquity and retains visible archaeological remains.

On site visitors encounter tombs, building foundations and remnants of temples and later Hellenistic and Roman installations. The ruins include funerary architecture that reflects Amathus’s long occupation and links with wider eastern Mediterranean cultures.

Amathus developed in the first millennium BCE and remained an active city through the Classical and Roman periods before declining in late antiquity. Archaeological work over the 19th and 20th centuries has documented its necropoleis and urban layout.

The ruins lie on the southern Cypriot coast close to modern Limassol and the coastal road; the site is accessible from the city and sits among low coastal hills and beaches.
