Amantaní
Island Inhabited Lake Titicaca island with traditional terraces
On Lake Titicaca, Amantani island features family-run homestays, stone platforms atop two sacred hills and steep paths offering broad views of the lake and nearby islands.
Amantani is an inhabited island in Lake Titicaca in Peru’s Puno region, known for its two sacred hilltop archaeological sites and an enduring tradition of community homestays. It is one of the larger inhabited islands on the Peruvian side of the lake and is part of the Titicaca island landscape.
The island’s principal attractions are the two stone-built temple platforms on the highest points, commonly called Pachatata and Pachamama, with stepped paths and terraced agriculture on the slopes. Visitors typically walk between villages and up to the ruins for panoramic views across Lake Titicaca and nearby islands.
Archaeological evidence and local tradition link the sites to pre-Inca and Inca-period ritual activities; the island has remained continuously inhabited with farming and livestock as the main subsistence activities. Tourism developed around day trips and overnight homestays from Puno in the 20th century.
Amantani sits in the eastern basin of Lake Titicaca in the Puno department; it is accessible only by boat from Puno and neighbouring islands. The island shares the high-altitude plateau environment of the Titicaca basin and is characterized by steep cultivated terraces and stone-built village houses.
- Access and accommodation: Most visitors arrive by boat from Puno or nearby islands and generally stay overnight in local family homestays rather than hotels.
- Altitude: The island sits at high altitude on Lake Titicaca, so allow time to acclimatize and expect thin air during walking and climbing to the hilltop temples.
What to See #
- Pachatata and Pachamama: A pair of hilltop pre-Columbian temple sites that crown the island and are locally venerated as the male and female sacred hills; both are stone-ruin platforms reached by stepped paths.
- Villages and terraces: Two inhabited villages where visitors normally stay with local families in homestays and see terraces of subsistence agriculture on steep slopes.
How to Get to Amantaní #
Boats leave from the port of Puno (Puerto Puno) on Lake Titicaca; common crossings to Amantaní take roughly 2-4 hours depending on the boat and stops. Most travelers book through tour operators or via the Puno dock; private launches can be arranged from nearby Juliaca/Puno. Once ashore, the main villages are an easy walk from the landing.
Tips for Visiting Amantaní #
- Book a homestay in advance; most families expect visitors and there are usually only a handful of licensed guest houses.
- Climb to both hilltops - Pachatata and Pachamama - for sunrise and sunset; the light is extraordinary and preserves a view of both Puno and the Bolivian shore.
- Respect the nightly community ritual: families often invite guests to join meals or traditional dances - accept gracefully and leave tips in small bills rather than large banknotes.
