Amacayacu National Natural Park is a protected area in Colombia’s Amazonas Department established to conserve Amazonian rainforest along the upper Amazon River. It was created in the 1970s to protect riverine and floodplain ecosystems.
The park encompasses varzea floodplain forest, seasonally flooded river channels and river islands, supporting rich wildlife including river dolphins and diverse birdlife. It is a destination for ecological tourism, scientific study and cultural visits to indigenous communities.
Established by the Colombian government in 1975 as a national natural park, it was set aside to preserve representative Amazon habitats and to regulate sustainable use by local communities and visitors.
The park lies along the Colombian stretch of the Amazon River, accessible by boat from the regional town of Leticia in the southernmost part of Colombia’s Amazonas Department.
