Altmühlsee

Altmühlsee is an artificial reservoir in Bavaria, Germany, located near the town of Gunzenhausen and within the Franconian Lake District. It functions as a regional flood-control and recreation lake and forms part of a cluster of managed lakes in Middle Franconia.

The lake offers lakeside beaches, sailing and small-boat facilities, cycling and walking paths along the shore, plus designated nature areas for birdwatching. Several picnic and recreation areas are distributed around the shoreline, and a marina provides access for recreational boating.

The reservoir was created in the late 20th century as part of a regional water-management and leisure scheme; it was developed to regulate flows of the Altmühl river and to provide recreational space. Management of the shoreline balances leisure use with protected reedbeds and bird habitats.

The lake sits in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district of Bavaria, in the area commonly known as the Franconian Lake District. The nearest sizeable town is Gunzenhausen; the setting is lowland Franconia with agricultural countryside and mixed woodland.
