Alpamayo is a peak in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca celebrated for its sharply pyramidal north face and striking appearance, with an elevation of about 5,947 metres. It is located in the Department of Ancash and is a frequent subject of mountaineering photography and alpine routes.
Climbers approach Alpamayo via high camps in the Cordillera Blanca and technical ice and mixed routes are found on its faces. The mountain features steep, icy slopes that require alpine climbing skills and experience.
Alpamayo sits within the glaciated valleys of the Cordillera Blanca, accessible from Huaraz and local base villages, and is part of the landscape protected by Huascarán National Park.

- Plan any visit in the dry season (May-September) when trekking and viewpoints are least likely to be clouded by afternoon storms.
- Approach Alpamayo via the standard trekking corridor from Cashapampa/Santa Cruz-viewpoints of the famous north face are reached by extending popular treks rather than by a single-day drive.
- If you're not a technical climber, join a guided trek to the Alpamayo base/viewpoint rather than attempting routes up the mountain itself; the peak is highly technical and most visitors come to admire it from camp and passes.
