Allalinhorn
Mountain Valais alpine peak popular with climbers and skiers
Allalinhorn above Saas-Fee offers one of the Alps’ most accessible 4,000‑m climbs; guided glacier routes, cable-car access and panoramic views attract climbers and ski-touring parties.
Allalinhorn is a 4,027-metre peak in the Valais Alps of Switzerland near the resort of Saas-Fee. It is one of the more accessible Alpine four-thousanders and is frequently climbed from the high-elevation Mittelallalin lift station.
The normal route traverses the Allalin Glacier and requires standard glacier travel and crevasse-awareness rather than technical rock climbing, making it popular with guided groups and skiers in spring and early summer. The mountain offers broad panoramic views over the Saas valley and neighboring peaks.
Development of lift access to Mittelallalin and established hut/route infrastructure mean the climb is commonly done as a day ascent from Saas-Fee during the main summer season. Alpine conditions can change rapidly, so weather and glacier conditions must be assessed before an attempt.
The peak sits directly above the Saas-Fee area in the canton of Valais and is part of the broader Mischabel-Alps region of southern Switzerland.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 4,027 metres, making it a commonly attempted "4,000er" in the Swiss Alps suitable for well-acclimatized beginners under guided conditions.
- Access route: The usual approach uses the Saas-Fee lift system to Mittelallalin, reducing the climb to a moderate glacier route from the high station.
What to See #
- Summit: Summit - Typical routes reach the 4,027-metre summit from the Mittelallalin station via the Allalin Glacier on a standard glacier ascent that gains roughly 570 metres.
- Mittelallalin (3,456 m): Mittelallalin station and ice pavilion - High-elevation lift station at about 3,456 metres providing access to the standard climbing route and an ice grotto exhibition.
How to Get to Allalinhorn #
Allalinhorn is usually approached from Saas‑Fee in the canton of Valais. Drive or take the train to Visp/Brig and continue by road into the Saastal to Saas‑Fee (driving time from Visp/Brig is typically around 40-60 minutes). From Saas‑Fee take the cable car system (to Felskinn) and then the Metro Alpin funicular to the Mittelallalin area; from the upper station parties set out onto the Fee Glacier for the normal ascent route. Check lift and glacier travel conditions and plan for guided glacier travel if you are not experienced.
Tips for Visiting Allalinhorn #
- Take the Saas‑Fee to Mittelallalin cable car as the standard access point - the classic Allalinhorn route commonly starts from the Mittelallalin station on the Saas‑Fee side.
- Start very early (pre-dawn) from the top station to minimize glacier hazards from midday melt and to avoid afternoon storms; the summit route is a glacier crossing and conditions change quickly.
- If you lack glacier experience, book a local guide or join a guided summit tour; many day-trippers underestimate crevasse risk on the route despite the short technical approach from the cable car.
Best Time to Visit Allalinhorn #
Climb Allalinhorn in the high alpine summer (June-September) when glacier routes are most commonly guided and access is reliable.
