Algarve
Area Southern Portuguese region with popular Atlantic beaches
Portugal’s Algarve features limestone cliffs and sea caves like Benagil, resort towns such as Lagos and Faro, seafood restaurants and numerous golf courses along sun-warmed coastlines.
The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost coastal region, in Faro district, known for its long Atlantic coastline, beaches, cliffs and tourist infrastructure. It is a major national and international holiday destination with towns and resorts spread along its shore.
Beach tourism, water sports, golf and boat trips to sea caves are the most common visitor activities. The region includes protected coastal systems such as the Ria Formosa barrier-lagoon complex near Faro, and popular towns on both the western and eastern coasts that offer historic centres and marina facilities. Cliff-top viewpoints and maritime features such as sea caves attract day trips and sightseeing boats.
Historically the Algarve was a crossroads of Mediterranean and Atlantic maritime cultures and later developed as a major tourism region from the mid-20th century onwards. Traditional fishing villages transformed into resort towns while much of the coastline retained protected natural zones.
Geographically the Algarve occupies the southern edge of mainland Portugal, stretching from the western Cape St. Vincent area to the border with Spain in the east, with Faro as the regional capital and main transport hub.
- Coastline character: The region's coastline is dominated by limestone cliffs, sheltered bays and sandy beaches, with many sea caves and grottoes accessible by boat.
- Best times to visit: Peak visitor season runs in the summer months; spring and autumn offer milder crowds and good conditions for hiking and birdwatching in the coastal parks.
What to See #
- Ria Formosa Natural Park: A coastal lagoon and barrier-island system near the regional capital that is an important habitat for migratory birds and a protected natural area with walking and boat routes.
- Lagos: A historic port town on the western Algarve known for walled old town streets, nearby beaches and a busy marina.
- Sagres headland: A southwestern headland with dramatic cliffs and a historic fortress; it marks the region's exposed seaward end and is popular for coastal viewpoints.
How to Get to Algarve #
The Algarve region is served by Faro Airport (FAO). From Faro you can drive west or east along the A22 (Via do Infante) or the coastal EN125 to reach towns throughout the Algarve. Driving distances from Faro to popular towns are typically on the order of tens of kilometres-for example, Albufeira is roughly 40 km west of Faro, with more distant towns (toward Lagos) up to around 80-90 km.
Tips for Visiting Algarve #
- Visit the Algarve in shoulder seasons (May-June or September-October) for warm sea conditions, far fewer tourists and easier parking at popular cliff viewpoints and beaches.
- If you plan to see Benagil Cave or other sea caves, book a licensed boat or kayak tour early in the day-slots fill fast during high season and operators often run weather-dependent limits.
Best Time to Visit Algarve #
The Algarve is best in spring or autumn for warm weather with fewer crowds; summer is very busy and hot.
