Cave Neolithic cave settlement with prehistoric burials
Neolithic cave and archaeological site on the Peloponnese; visitors see prehistoric chambers, burial deposits and guided tours of the karst passages.
Alepotrypa Cave is a karst cave system in the southern Peloponnese notable for its Neolithic occupation and burial deposits. Archaeological evidence shows repeated use from the Neolithic into the Bronze Age, with pottery, human remains and other cultural material preserved in sealed layers.
The site includes a large central chamber and a network of side passages and smaller chambers that were used for different activities, including habitation and burial. Finds from the cave have contributed to understanding early farming communities and mortuary practices in the Aegean mainland.
Excavations have documented multiple cultural phases preserved in the cave stratigraphy, making it one of the key prehistoric cave sites in southern Greece.
The cave lies near the village of Pyrgos Dirou in the Mani region of the southern Peloponnese, set within a karst landscape known for caves and underground streams.
