Alden Biesen Castle
Castle Large castle and cultural estate in Flanders
16th-century castle complex in Bilzen, once a Teutonic commandery; open to visitors for restored interiors, formal gardens and seasonal cultural events.
Alden Biesen is a large historic commandery and estate in Belgian Limburg known for its red-brick manor buildings, inner courtyard and landscaped grounds. The complex was the headquarters of a medieval knightly order’s regional commandery and later developed into a stately compound with administrative and religious buildings.
Visitors encounter an ordered ensemble of halls, arcades, a central courtyard and extensive gardens and parkland used for cultural events and public programming. The site is regularly used for concerts, festivals and exhibitions, and offers guided tours of its main buildings and grounds.
The estate grew around a medieval commandery established by a military-religious order and was expanded and remodeled over the early modern period into the manor and institutional complex seen today. Its role shifted from a fortified monastic commandery to a residential and administrative centre for the order and later to a public cultural site.
Sited near Bilzen in the province of Limburg, the complex sits in gently rolling farmland in eastern Flanders and is reached by regional roads from nearby cities such as Hasselt and Maastricht.
