Alcázar of Segovia
Castle Fairy-tale castle formerly royal fortress and museum
Perched above the confluence of rivers, Segovia’s Alcázar combines a fortified keep, towers and royal chambers; visitors tour armories, period rooms and climb a narrow stair for town and countryside views.
The Alcázar of Segovia is a historic fortress and palace in Segovia notable for its fairy-tale silhouette and hilltop position. Its origins date to the medieval period when it served as a royal stronghold and later became a royal residence.
The complex includes a main keep, defensive towers and ceremonial chambers that reflect construction and rebuilding across medieval and later centuries. Visitors can explore ramparts, halls that once housed royal apartments, and museum displays on the castle’s military and regal history.
The site developed from an original fortress into a residence favored by Castilian monarchs; it underwent significant rebuilding in the 12th to 15th centuries and later restorations, adapting its military functions to palace uses. It has served varied roles including royal residence and military academy before becoming a historic monument.
The Alcázar sits above the meeting of the Eresma and Clamores rivers in Segovia’s old town, within easy walking distance of the Roman aqueduct and cathedral.
- Uses over time: The castle has medieval origins and was used as a royal residence, an artillery school and later a state monument open to visitors.
- Best viewpoints: Best external views and photographs are taken from the nearby Plaza del Azoguejo and along the Eresma riverbank.

How to Get to Alcázar of Segovia #
-
From Madrid: you can take the RENFE AVE/ALVIA to Segovia-Guiomar station and then a local bus or taxi for the ~10-15 km transfer into Segovia city centre (the taxi/bus ride is typically ~15-20 minutes). Alternatively there are regular intercity buses from Madrid (Moncloa bus station) direct to Segovia city centre (about 1h-1h15).
-
By car: Segovia is about 90 km northwest of Madrid (roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on route and traffic). The Alcázar sits in the historic centre above the Plaza del Azoguejo (the Roman Aqueduct); from the city centre it is an easy 5-10 minute walk.
Tips for Visiting Alcázar of Segovia #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket in advance and arrive at opening so you can head straight up the castle tower-the views over Segovia and the Roman aqueduct are the highlight that fills up later in the day.
- Start your visit on the lower levels (state rooms and armory) and save the tower climb for early or late in your visit to avoid the main flow of visitors tightly packed on the spiral stairs. Most day-trippers focus on the exterior and aqueduct, so allow time inside to see the royal chambers and small museum displays.
- Combine your Alcázar visit with an early walk to the nearby Aqueduct and Cathedral to avoid backtracking across the busiest parts of the old town later in the day.
