Alcazaba of Almería
Monument Moorish fortress and citadel overlooking Almería city
A 10th‑century Moorish fortress complex overlooking Almería, with defensive walls, gardens and city views; tourists come to walk battlements, see archaeological remains and survey the coastal plain.
The Alcazaba of Almería is a large fortified complex of Moorish origin perched above the city of Almería in Andalusia, Spain. It was constructed as a defensive citadel and palace complex to protect the settlement and its port.
The site comprises an upper citadel with walls and towers, lower enclosures and internal courts that once contained administrative and residential buildings. The fortress complex retains substantial sections of medieval Moorish masonry and defensive design.
Construction began in the medieval period under Muslim rule and the Alcazaba was expanded and adapted over subsequent centuries to meet military and administrative needs. Restoration and conservation work in the 20th century has preserved many of its visible elements.
The fortress stands on a hill overlooking Almería and the Mediterranean Sea, close to the city centre and the port. Its elevated bastions provide panoramic views of the city and coastline.

Tips for Visiting Alcazaba of Almería #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid Almería's midday heat and to get softer light on the fortress walls; weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
- Start your walk by following the outer defensive walls and higher terraces - many visitors stay in the inner courtyards and miss the panoramic views over the city and the port.
- Time your visit outside any local festival days (check Almería city listings) if you want to avoid coach groups; arriving shortly before closing can also yield a calmer experience as guided groups thin out.
