Alcazaba de Almería

Alcazaba de Almería is a large Moorish fortress complex overlooking the city of Almería in Andalusia, Spain, originally constructed in the 10th century and expanded in subsequent medieval periods. It occupies a prominent hill above the historic centre and port and is one of the city’s principal monuments.

The site comprises multiple fortified enclosures linked by walls, gates and towers, with accessible ramparts that provide extensive views across the city and out to the Mediterranean. Visitors use the stepped paths between terraces to explore the upper citadel, lower courtyards and the surviving defensive architecture.

Construction began in the 10th century during the Caliphate of Córdoba, and the complex was enlarged and modified by later local rulers in the medieval period; it served as a military stronghold and administrative centre. Over time parts have been restored to conserve the fortifications and to make the site accessible to the public.

The Alcazaba sits on a hill immediately above Almería’s historic centre and port, within easy walking distance of the Plaza Vieja and the shoreline. It dominates the city skyline and is reached by pedestrian routes from the central streets below.

What to See #

• Upper citadel: The highest enclosure sits on the hilltop and contains the main defensive keep, remains of administrative and residential structures, and the principal battlements; it is the oldest and most fortified sector.
• Lower enclosure: A series of lower walled enclosures and terraces descend the slope, linked by gates and stairways and incorporating restored gardens and pathways used by visitors to move between levels.
• Walls and towers: Long stretches of curtain wall and multiple towers date to the early medieval period and later repairs, forming the visible ramparts that run along the hill and provide elevated viewpoints over the city and port.
