Alcántara Bridge

The Alcántara Bridge is a Roman stone-arch bridge that crosses the Tagus River at the town of Alcántara in Extremadura, Spain, and is celebrated as a major surviving example of Roman bridge engineering on the Iberian Peninsula.

The bridge features multiple masonry arches and a monumental inscription panel that records Roman involvement in its construction; it has been admired for the quality of its stonework and arch design. Visitors come to view the arches, the inscription and the views downriver from the bridge deck.

Constructed in the early second century during the Roman imperial period, the structure has endured repairs and restorations over many centuries following battle damage and floods, but much of the Roman fabric remains visible. Its long history of use and maintenance reflects its strategic and transportation importance across eras.

Situated at Alcántara in the province of Cáceres, the bridge spans the Tagus River in western Spain; it sits above a steep river valley and forms a focal point for the small town that grew at the crossing.
