Albrechtsburg

Albrechtsburg is a late Gothic castle-palace in Meissen, Saxony, Germany, built in the late 15th century and prominently sited above the Elbe River.

Visitors explore ornate late-Gothic interiors, exhibition rooms and terraces that offer views across the Elbe and Meissen’s cathedral. The site is notable for its architecture and for housing museum displays, including material relating to Meissen porcelain.

Constructed for the Wettin rulers in the late 1400s as a princely residence, the building’s use evolved over centuries; in the early 18th century Meissen’s porcelain activities were associated with the castle before production moved to purpose-built facilities.

The castle occupies a rocky spur above the Elbe in the town of Meissen, roughly a short drive northwest of Dresden, adjacent to the cathedral and the historical core of Meissen.
