Albi Cathedral (Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile) is a large fortified brick Gothic cathedral in Albi, Occitania, France, begun in 1282 and completed over the late medieval period. It is widely noted for being built almost entirely of brick and for its monumental, fortress-like exterior.
Inside visitors find an extensive program of painted decoration, carved choir stalls and a monumental Last Judgment fresco on the west wall, along with richly decorated chapels and sculptural work. The cathedral forms a central part of Albi’s UNESCO-listed episcopal city and is paired with the medieval episcopal palace, now a museum.
The cathedral was commissioned by the local bishops after the late 13th century as a symbol of ecclesiastical authority and was built in successive campaigns through the 14th and 15th centuries. Its defensive appearance reflects the political and religious tensions in the region following the Albigensian period.
Sited on the banks of the Tarn in the historic centre of Albi in southern France, the cathedral occupies a hill above the river and is adjacent to the Palais de la Berbie and the old town.
- Construction and material: Construction began in 1282 and the cathedral is commonly described as the largest brick cathedral in the world, notable for its massive exterior and richly ornamented interior.
- Museum nearby: The Palais de la Berbie adjacent to the cathedral houses the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, making the cathedral part of a compact historic ensemble in Albi's old town.
