Albera Massif
Mountains Pyrenean massif on Franco-Spanish border with forests
Straddling Spain’s eastern Pyrenees near the French border, the Albera Massif mixes Mediterranean scrub, forested ridges and coastal views; hikers and birdwatchers use trails linking small Catalan villages.
The Albera Massif is a low mountain range at the eastern end of the Pyrenees, straddling the border between southern France and northeastern Spain. It is the easternmost section of the Pyrenean chain and is lower and more rounded than the central Pyrenees.
The range features Mediterranean-influenced vegetation on its seaward slopes and more montane flora inland, with numerous hiking routes and viewpoints over the coastal plain and the Gulf of Lion. The highest named summit is Puig Neulós, which reaches about 1,256 metres.
Geologically the massif is part of the Pyrenean orogeny and consists of folded and uplifted rock typical of the mountain-building processes that formed the Pyrenees. Human use has historically included pastoralism, small rural settlements, and cross-border movement.
Geographically it sits between the Roussillon plain and the Catalan interior, close to the Mediterranean coast and south of the city of Perpignan on the French side and north of Figueres on the Spanish side.
