Archaeological Site Ruins of Roman town with hilltop remains
An ancient Roman town site in Abruzzo with surviving city walls, an amphitheatre and urban grid; visitors explore the ruins set against Apennine foothills.
Alba Fucens is an ancient Roman town ruin in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, situated near the Fucine basin and Mount Velino. The site was founded as a Roman colony in 304 BC and became an important military and administrative settlement in the Roman period.
The archaeological remains include a Roman amphitheatre or theatre, sections of polygonal defensive walls, street layouts, and foundations of public buildings that reflect the town’s planned urban grid. Visitors can walk among visible ruins that illustrate Roman town planning and fortification techniques.
Historically the colony was established by Rome in the early Republican period to control the central Apennines and the Fucine plain. Over time the settlement evolved through the Roman era and later periods; it has been the subject of archaeological study and partial restoration to make the major monuments accessible to the public.
The ruins sit on a hillside near the modern comune of Massa d’Albe and are reached from towns in the province of L’Aquila, overlooking the plain of the former Lake Fucino and with Mount Velino rising nearby.
