Alameda de Hércules
Square Historic public square and promenade in Seville
Wide promenade in Seville lined with plane trees and cafés; frequented for tapas, terraces, nightlife and open‑air social life around the square.
Alameda de Hércules is a public square and long tree-lined promenade in the historic centre of Seville, Andalusia, Spain. It is a well-known civic space in the city and is identified by two freestanding columns topped with sculpted figures.
The area combines open paved spaces with rows of plane trees, terraces, cafes and bars; it functions as both a daytime urban park and one of Seville’s lively evening social hubs. The square hosts markets, street performances and a mix of hospitality venues, making it a common starting point for nightlife in the surrounding neighbourhood.
The square dates to the early modern period as a civic promenade and has been adapted and pedestrianised over time to serve changing urban uses. Its columns and promenade reflect layers of urban development rather than a single historic monument.
Alameda de Hércules lies in Seville’s Macarena district, on the northern edge of the historic centre and close to the left bank of the Guadalquivir River. It is about 1 kilometre north of Seville Cathedral and is easily reached on foot from central neighbourhoods.
- Nightlife and markets: Evenings and weekends are the liveliest times, when bars, terraces and local markets animate the square.
- Plane trees: The plane trees that line the avenue provide shade in summer and define the promenade's long axial layout.
What to See #
- Columns of Hercules and Julius Caesar: Two freestanding stone columns topped with sculptures of Hercules and Julius Caesar mark the square's identity and stand at one end of the promenade; these columns are a focal photo and meeting point.
- Promenade and plaza: A long, tree-lined boulevard runs through the space and is lined with cafes, bars and small shops that host daily life, street markets and evening activity.

Tips for Visiting Alameda de Hércules #
- Visit late evening to watch the square come alive with locals at tapas bars; the area is wide and easy to hop between terraces.
- Look for the two Roman column-topped monuments (donated by the Count of Barajas in 1574) - they are older than the plane trees around them and often missed by quick tours.
- Avoid Saturday midday when the small bars and shops can crowd; weekdays after 8pm are livelier and more authentic.
