Why Visit Alagoas #

Maragogi’s galés - offshore coral pools visible at low tide - are the region’s headline attraction, with clear snorkeling and boat trips from Praia de Antunes. Go with a licensed operator and check tide times; otherwise you’ll miss the pools at their best.

São Miguel dos Milagres offers low-key beaches, tide pools and pousadas with hammocks - ideal if you want to avoid Maragogi crowds. Cycling between small fishing villages reveals quiet reefs and excellent local seafood at rustic beach restaurants.

Maceió mixes an urban waterfront (Pajuçara) with lively bars, handicraft markets and lagoon-side dining. Eat at a market stall for fresh sururu or grilled fish; the street scene is relaxed, but be selective about where you leave valuables.

Penedo on the São Francisco River has colonial churches, riverside mansions and a slower pace - a good day trip to see northeastern baroque architecture without the crowds found in larger cities.

Alagoas’ seafood is central: try sururu (mussel stew), moqueca and grilled prawns in beach towns. Fresh-caught fish is often served with local coconut rice and farofa; ask locals where the fishermen sell dinner for the freshest options.

Alagoas is a compact, coastal state where most attractions are concentrated near the capital, so journeys are shorter than in many interior Brazilian states. Road access to beaches is generally straightforward, but expect seasonal crowding around popular resort towns.

  • Domestic Flights - Maceió (Zumbi dos Palmares MCZ) is the principal airport for arrivals by air, with regular flights from major Brazilian hubs. Smaller regional flights also serve northern and southern coastal towns.
  • Rental Car - A rental car makes it easy to reach popular beaches and nearby towns-many highlights lie 20-60 km from Maceió, with Praia do Francês only about 25-30 km away. Coastal roads are generally paved, but expect congestion near resort areas in high season.
  • Intercity Buses - Intercity bus services connect Maceió with Recife and inland towns; buses are frequent and affordable for short to medium distances. Urban buses, taxis and ride-hailing operate inside Maceió for local trips.
