The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric necropolis located beneath a suburban area of Paola (near Valletta), Malta. It is one of the most important and well-preserved examples of subterranean prehistoric architecture.
Visitors encounter carved rock chambers, altars, and passageways arranged on multiple levels with fine stonework and painted red ochre traces in places. The structure’s confined spaces and preserved surfaces convey funerary and ritual functions rather than large public rooms.
The Hypogeum dates to the Neolithic period and was used as a burial and ritual site by prehistoric communities on Malta; archaeology from the site has yielded human remains, decorated objects, and carved stone features. It was found and partially excavated in the early 20th century and has since been conserved carefully.
Located under the town of Paola (near Floriana and Valletta), the underground complex sits within the densely inhabited central-southern part of Malta and is managed with strict visitor controls due to its archaeological sensitivity.
