Pico das Agulhas Negras is a mountain peak in Itatiaia National Park on the border of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, Brazil. It reaches an elevation of 2,791 meters and is noted for its sharp, needle-like rock formations.
The summit is capped by dark, jagged spires of rock that give the peak its name, translated as “Black Needles.” Reaching the top requires hiking and sections of basic scrambling, and the summit offers broad views over the park’s high plateau and neighboring peaks.
The name reflects the prominent rock needles at the summit and the peak has been a mountaineering objective for climbers and hikers since the early 20th century. It lies within the protected area of Itatiaia National Park.
Located inside Itatiaia National Park in the Serra da Mantiqueira on the Minas Gerais-Rio de Janeiro state border, it is reachable from park trails and mountain refuges and lies within driving distance of major cities in southeastern Brazil.
