Aggtelek National Park protects a karst landscape in northeastern Hungary notable for its extensive cave systems. The park is internationally significant for the Baradla-Domica cave system, which continues across the border into Slovakia.
The Baradla cave passages open for public tours run for several kilometres of the system and the whole cave network measures roughly 25-26 kilometres in total. The park combines cave conservation with surface karst features, forests and traditional rural landscapes.
The protected area sits in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County near the Hungarian-Slovak border, with the village of Aggtelek serving as a principal access point and visitor centre.

How to Get to Aggtelek National Park #
Aggtelek is about 40-50 km north of Miskolc. From Budapest, take train services to Miskolc then regional buses to Jósvafő or Aggtelek (total travel ~3-3.5 hours). By road, follow route 26 then local roads to the village; parking is available near main entrances. Guided cave tours depart from visitor centres in Jósvafő and Aggtelek.
Tips for Visiting Aggtelek National Park #
- Book a guided Baradla Cave tour in advance during high season; some routes sell out.
- Wear trousers and a light jacket inside caves - temperatures stay around 10-12°C.
- Visit Jósvafő village for traditional water-mill houses and the small ethnographic museum most visitors miss.
