Aggtelek
Cave Hungarian village famous for extensive karst cave system
A village on Hungary’s karst plateau, gateway to Aggtelek National Park and the Baradla cave system. Tourists come for showcaves, guided spelunking, limestone formations and marked forest trails tracing a rugged, subterranean landscape listed with its Slovak counterparts.
Aggtelek is a village and karst area in north-eastern Hungary notable for its caves and limestone landscape. The locality gives its name to the surrounding Aggtelek National Park and the extensive Baradla cave system.
The Baradla-Domica cave system contains long underground galleries and richly developed dripstone formations; a portion of these caves is developed as a show cave with guided routes and lighting. Above ground, the park has marked hiking trails, karst springs and sinkholes that illustrate the region’s geology.
Local use of the area shifted from small-scale rural settlement toward conservation and tourism in the 20th century with the creation of the national park. The karst area and its caves are protected and managed for both scientific research and visitor access.
Aggtelek lies in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County near Hungary’s border with Slovakia, in a wooded karst landscape of northern Hungary; the nearest regional centres are the towns that serve as gateways to the park.
- Show cave tours: Show cave tours are the main visitor activity; different tour lengths and difficulty levels are offered and guided visits explain the karst features.
- UNESCO listing: The karst system is transboundary with Slovakia and is protected under a UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst.
