Aggstein Castle

Aggstein Castle is a medieval ruin on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube River in the Wachau region of Lower Austria. The site occupies a strategic position above the river and is noted for its dramatic setting.

The ruins include the remains of defensive walls, towers and interior courtyards with paths and viewing points that look down the Danube valley and across the Wachau wine region. The site is used for guided visits and seasonal cultural events and is a noted viewpoint along the Danube route.

First documented in the medieval period, Aggstein was constructed as a fortification to control river traffic and the surrounding territory; it underwent rebuilding and changes of ownership across the Middle Ages and later fell into ruin. Conservation and tourist adaptation in modern times have opened the site for visitors.

The castle sits on the steep right bank of the Danube between the towns of Melk and Krems in Lower Austria, within the Wachau cultural landscape.
