Aeclanum

Aeclanum is an archaeological site of an ancient town in Campania, southern Italy, with remains principally from the Roman period. The site lies near the modern town of Mirabella Eclano in the province of Avellino.

Excavated streets, public buildings and structural remains are exposed across the site, including visible bathing complexes and an entertainment building interpreted as a theatre or amphitheatre. The open-air ruins and nearby funerary areas give a sense of the town’s layout and public architecture.

Aeclanum was a settlement occupied in pre-Roman and Roman times and became incorporated into the Roman sphere; most surviving structures date to the Roman imperial era. The town declined after the late antique period and survived in ruined form into the Middle Ages, leaving archaeological traces investigated in the modern era.

The site sits close to Mirabella Eclano in inland Campania, northeast of Avellino and within the broader Apennine region of southern Italy. It is accessible by road from nearby provincial towns and is part of the archaeological landscape of the Irpinia area.
